Classic American Novels

The guys over at Power Line blog (warning: site by often-raving conservative lawyers) have a cool list of what they think are the top 21 American novels ever written.  (Funny, there aren’t any novels there by Canadian, Mexican, or Brazilian authors…)

It’s a great-looking list, and I’m happy to say I’ve actually read a number of them.  And yes, that number is > 0, although I have to fess up that Moby Dick is still unfinished.

There are some works on the list that I’ll look to get into after mid-July when James and I finish up work on the book.

Surprised to see they left off Gone with the Wind, not surprised to see they left off books with any leftish slant. (like Native Son, Grapes of Wrath, Slaughterhouse-Five, etc)

I don't think you can complain about Slaughterhouse-Five being left off when Farenheit 451 is on there -- that's a pretty devastating bit against totalitarianism and could have a "leftish slant" if you chose to look at it that way.

They've got some good follow on posts with continuing discussion on the topic.

You gotta have some Vonnegut on there though, he is one of the greatest American authors... it might have to do with his last novel "Man without a Country".

Farenheit 451 is decent, but I wouldnt call it great literature.. :)
